
PC Boots to Black Screen After Sleep: What Is Actually Wrong
TL;DR: A black screen after sleep is usually caused by a bad graphics driver, a botched fast startup setting, or a monitor that lost its signal handshake. Work through the steps below in order. Most cases are fixable without touching hardware. A few require a shop visit.
What you need
- A keyboard and mouse (working)
- Access to Windows Settings and Device Manager

- A second monitor or TV with an HDMI or DisplayPort cable (helpful but not required)
Step 1: Rule out a frozen display before assuming the worst
Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. This key combo resets the graphics driver without rebooting. You will hear a beep and the screen may flash. If the display comes back, your graphics driver crashed during sleep. That is your culprit.
If nothing happens, try pressing Caps Lock and watching the keyboard light. If it toggles, Windows is still running but the display is not getting a signal. That narrows the problem considerably.
If Caps Lock does nothing, the system is genuinely frozen. Hold the power button to force a shutdown and move to Step 2.
Step 2: Check whether this happens every time or just sometimes
This matters more than most people think.

Step 3: Disable Fast Startup
Fast Startup is Microsoft's attempt to make Windows boot faster by blending shutdown with hibernate. (It works great until it doesn't, which is often.) It is one of the most common causes of black screens after sleep on Windows 10 and 11.
- Open Control Panel, go to Power Options.
- Click Choose what the power buttons do.
- Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Uncheck Turn on fast startup.
- Save and restart.
Test a few sleep cycles. If the black screen stops, you found it.
Step 4: Update or roll back the graphics driver
A bad driver update is behind more black-screen-after-sleep complaints than almost anything else. This applies to both NVIDIA and AMD cards, and to Intel integrated graphics.
If the problem started recently after a Windows Update or driver update:
- Right-click the Start button, open Device Manager.
- Expand Display Adapters, right-click your GPU.
- Choose Update driver, then Search automatically. Or, choose Roll Back Driver if the option is available.

Step 5: Check your power plan and sleep settings
Windows has a habit of letting hardware sleep more aggressively than your components can handle.
- Open Settings, go to System, then Power & Sleep.
- Set sleep to a longer interval or Never temporarily, just to test.
- Open Device Manager, expand Display Adapters, right-click your GPU, choose Properties.
- Go to the Power Management tab. Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power if present.
- Do the same under Universal Serial Bus Controllers for any USB-connected monitor or hub.
Also check your monitor's own power settings. Some displays, especially budget ones, time out aggressively and do not reliably re-sync after Windows sends the wake signal.
Step 6: Test with a different cable or port
This one gets ignored constantly. (People assume cables just work until they don't. Cables absolutely fail, especially HDMI.)
- Swap the cable between your PC and monitor.
- Try a different port on the GPU if you have one. Move from HDMI to DisplayPort or vice versa.
- If you have a second screen available, plug it in and see if the black screen follows the PC or stays with the original monitor.
If the problem follows the monitor, the monitor is partially at fault. If the problem follows the PC, keep digging.
Step 7: Check for RAM or hardware instability
If none of the above fixed it and the pattern is random, run Windows Memory Diagnostic.
- Search for Windows Memory Diagnostic in the Start menu.
- Choose Restart now and check for problems.
- The tool runs on reboot and logs results. Check Event Viewer under Windows Logs > System for MemoryDiagnostics-Results after it finishes.
Errors here point to a failing RAM stick. Unseating and reseating RAM can sometimes resolve intermittent contact issues. If one stick is bad, pull it and test with the other.
If you have an overclocked CPU or RAM (even from a factory "XMP" profile), try disabling the XMP profile in BIOS and testing at stock speeds. Instability during sleep resume is a known side effect of marginal overclocks.
Common mistakes
Reinstalling Windows first. That is the nuclear option. It rarely fixes a driver or power setting problem, and you lose time. Do it last, not first.
Ignoring the monitor as a variable. The PC is not always the problem. A monitor with a failing power supply board or a flaky firmware update can cause identical symptoms.
Downloading random "driver updater" software. These are almost universally junk or worse. Get drivers from NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or the manufacturer's own site. Full stop.
Assuming it will fix itself. It will not. A driver crash that happens once during sleep will keep happening. Something changed, and something needs to be undone or updated.
Bottom line
Ninety percent of black-screen-after-sleep problems come down to four things: a crashed graphics driver, Fast Startup conflicts, an aggressive power plan, or a bad cable or port. Work the steps above in order and you will almost certainly land on the answer.
